Drug Companies Developing “Pure” Hydrocodone

As reported in Salem’s Statesman Journal on Tuesday, December 27th, 2011, drug companies are currently developing “pure” hydrocodone, which is the nation’s second most abused medicine.  The new pills containing up to 10 times the amount of the drug that’s currently found in medications like Vicodin.

Concerned about the potential for abuse and overdose, the president of the National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse, April Rovero, said “We just don’t need this on the market.”

Currently, in Oregon, the number of deaths from prescription medications surpasses the number of deaths from overdose from all other illicit drugs combined and also outranks deaths from homicide and traffic accidents.

The costs of prescription drug abuse to employers is in the billions of dollars per year.
